In 1712, a 33-year old aspiring naturalist named Mark Catesby sailed from London to the New World to study its exotic flora and fauna. After completing 263 watercolors, he returned home and dedicated his life to translating his art into etchings for publication. A delicate sprig, in his collection of "curious trees and shrubs", serves as the basis for this festive pattern.
